2011 GABA Citizen of the Year

Gateway Area Business Association is proud to announce our 11th annual Gateway Citizen of the Year recipient – Amanda Fritz. Judges were David Douglas Superintendent Don Grotting, Parkrose Superintendent Karen Gray and Portland Christian Superintendent Annette Johnson. Amanda Fritz is Portland’s Commissioner and a good friend to Gateway. She was born and raised in England, and a graduate of Cambridge University with a Master’s degree in Biological Sciences. Amanda immigrated to the United States in 1979 at the age of 21. She completed nursing training in Pittsburgh and spent four years in Rochester, NY, then realized that Portland is the best place in the world to live and raise a family, and moved here in 1986. She worked for 22 years in inpatient psychiatry at OHSU, and served for seven years on the Portland Planning Commission, before winning election to the Portland City Council in November, 2008.  She was the first candidate ever elected from the community using Portland’s Public Campaign Finance system. Amanda has been married to Steve for almost 30 years, and is the mother of Luke, Maxwell and Ali – all graduates of Portland Public Schools. To relax, she likes to pull ivy, scrub out graffiti, plant trees, yell at football and basketball games and of course sing “Happy Birthday” at GABA’s Fun-O-Rama Fair.
Who are Gateway’s Citizens of the Year? They have demonstrated commitment to the community, advancing its commercial, economic, financial, industrial, safety and civic interests.  They meet and cooperate with governmental agencies on matters of concern to business and support area Neighborhood Associations and groups. They are outstanding supporters of Gateway Area Business Association (GABA) and the community.
